Paul of the Cross on Thanksgiving...

"...deepest secrets...nothing beyond purity of heart..."

These are deepest secrets, and you need nothing beyond purity of heart, fidelity in virtue, remaining in one’s own nothingness, and giving all the glory to God by becoming a victim of love, sacrificed as a holocaust in the flames of divine love in continual thanksgiving for the gifts of the Lord. ~Paul of the Cross to Colomba Gertrude Gandolfi  (Gandolfi’s 20th letter on March 22, 1755 in Vol. 2 on Page 443 for Paul's Letter 946)

If God grants you feelings of devotion, receive them as a poor man and give him back what he has given you as a sacrifice of holocaust and thanksgiving. When you find yourself arid, cold, and dry, wait in silence and hope for the rain from heaven without making the least effort to stir up devotion. That is a mistake and an attachment to one’s own spiritual satisfaction. Love to be poor of spirit and in your nothingness, allowing this nothing to be lost in God, who is the true All. ~Paul of the Cross to Thomas Fossi (Fossi’s 96th letter on November 22, 1758 in Vol. 2 on Page 645 for Paul's Letter 1171)

The best thanksgiving that you can make for such a grace is to die always more to yourself with a continuous mortification of your internal passions and with the exercise of the holy virtues, especially of true humility of heart, patience, meekness, love toward God and your neighbor, but particular confidence with no one at all, keeping external and internal silence, being a friend of retirement in your cell, fleeing idleness, seeking to find your delight in choir and in your cell while treating with. ~Paul of the Cross to A Religious Sister (Sister’s  15th letter on May 6, 1764 in Vol. 3 on Page 215 for Paul's Letter 1462)
