Emptiness From Paul of the Cross Letters Remember that only humble souls, hidden and empty of self, please God. Strive to humble yourself more and more before God and before creatures as the least and most imperfect, and do not forget to look often at your past miseries, etc. ~Paul of the Cross to Colomba Gertrude Gandolfi (Gandolfi's 46th letter on March 12, 1763 in Vol. 3 on Page 175 for Paul's Letter 1401) One must open toward heaven the mouth of desire, empty of all other fullness, that thus it may not be reduced or restricted by some mouthful of another pleasure, but truly empty and open toward Him who says: Open your mouth wide and I shall fill it. [Ps. 80:11] ~John of the Cross Letters |
